X'Canché

If you're visiting the Yucatán, you need to see Chichén Itzá at least once—but if you have the time, you absolutely need to check out Ek Balam too. We really enjoyed Zona Arqueológica de Ek Balam. It's a completely different experience from Chichén Itzá. It feels quieter, more relaxed, and less commercial, which gives you a chance to slow down and really appreciate the history and architecture around you. One of the absolute highlights is that you can actually climb some of the ruins, including making your way to the top for an incredible view over the surrounding jungle. It's a totally different experience from simply looking at the structures from behind a barrier. Being able to walk through the site, climb the ancient structures, and see the landscape from above really gives you a sense of the scale of the place. The ruins themselves are impressive, with beautiful carvings and incredible architectural details. You can get much closer to everything here, which makes the history feel much more real. Chichén Itzá deserves its reputation and should definitely be on your list, but don't make the mistake of thinking you've experienced the Mayan ruins of the Yucatán after seeing only Chichén Itzá. Ek Balam has its own character and is absolutely worth the trip. If you're staying in Valladolid, it's also an easy addition to your itinerary and a great way to experience another side of the Yucatán. Chichén Itzá is the famous one. Ek Balam might be the one that surprises you—and being able to climb the ruins makes the experience that much better. Highly recommended!

The best Mayas ruins is not packed of people like Chichineza. The ruins are is very impressive how the Mayas building the cities you can climb the ruins. 100% recommend to go and check the ruins for few hours if like history! Also is cenote there which you can go and enjoy! Of course you need to pay to get in to the cenote.

Really a nice place, with a huge Main Pyramide. It's a good alternative, because Chichen iza is closed at the moment.(Protests) Different to Chichen iza you can climb up in the buildings and the pyramides. Entrance fee is 704 pesos for foreigners.

Ek Balam is a great archaeological site, but you should set your expectations correctly. Do not go expecting something like Chichén Itzá. It is much quieter. When I visited, there were only about 20 to 25 people there, which made the experience feel very relaxed. Climbing the main pyramid was easier than it looks, and the views from the top are absolutely great. If you join a guided tour, they will walk you through the entire site and explain its history in detail. I did not take a tour, so I was able to explore everything in about an hour. That said, the site is fairly minimal. There is just one shaded dome area to sit in, and not much else going on, so parts of it can feel quite empty, especially on a hot day. I visited on April 28th around noon, and the heat was intense. What made the experience worse was traveling there by scooter in the heat, which I would not recommend. If you plan to go, it is much better to arrive right when it opens to avoid the midday sun. As for costs, entry was around 50 US dollars per person, and scooter parking was about 50 pesos. Make sure to bring plenty of water and maybe some snacks because options are limited inside. Overall, my experience was mixed, but that does not mean yours will be. With better timing and preparation, it could easily be a great visit. Do a bit of research and plan ahead before you go.
