This was such a cool place to stop by! There is a (Spanish Language only) video with a little info on the site and then you are really free to walk the grounds, check out the new looking museum and take pictures. The views really are stunning. We found a couple of snake holes but no actual snakes, but that isn't unexpected. Absolutely worth stopping by!

Enjoyed the visit. They also have a small museum on the site in addition to the ruins. They provided an English translation board to carry around during the visit. They even allowed our service dog to enter. Admission was 210 pesos per person which is a bit high for a Mexican museum but I guess it’s worth it. I’d bring water and hat if not sun blocking umbrella.

Beautiful archeology site - one of the only sites I have seen that has round ruins vs. the pyramid like ones. There is also a museum on site explaining the local history. You can walk around and see everything in an hour. The view from the top is spectacular, a small cost of 100 pesos and free on Sundays.

Tzintzuntzan is one of the most important archaeological sites in western Mexico and was the ceremonial and political capital of the Purépecha (Tarascan) Empire before the Spanish conquest. It is best known for its distinctive yácatas, semicircular and rectangular stepped pyramids built on a large elevated platform. These structures were dedicated to Purépecha deities, particularly Curicaueri, the god of fire and the sun, and reflect an architectural style unique to this civilization, distinct from that of the Aztecs and Maya. The purple tree often seen at the Tzintzuntzan archaeological site is the jacaranda tree, known for its vibrant purple blossoms that bloom typically in spring (March to April). The presence of the jacaranda also highlights the integration of natural and cultural heritage at the site. Visitors walking among the pyramids can enjoy both the historical significance of the ceremonial platforms and the seasonal spectacle of the purple blooms, creating a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that defines the atmosphere of Tzintzuntzan today.

Amazing archaeological zone! This was the former capital of the purepechas until the Spanish conquered this place in the year 1520. One can only imagine what this place was like at its peak. The museum was sadly closed but we did get to see a cool video of the history surrounding the whole lake region.
