This is my favorite butterfly sanctuary. We have attended annually for the last few years. I always recommend picking up a guide at the entrance, they make the trip much more meaningful by answering any questions, but most important you are supporting the butterflies by allowing them to make a living and continue to work to conserve this beautiful place. I advise you to take water, hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothes and shoes. Use the rest rooms at the entrance or at the beginning of the trail, as they are the only ones. You can hike up or ride a horse up and down. The hike is not difficult as long as you take your time and enjoy it and don’t rush as there is loose gravel that can get slippery. The best part is to eat at their kitchens once you arrive back at the bottom and if you wish take a souvenir..

Sierra Chincua Butterfly Sanctuary is absolutely incredible. We visited on a private tour booked through Vibe Adventures, and the reserve exceeded every expectation. Tucked into the mountains, it’s peaceful, beautifully preserved, and offers stunning overlooks. And seeing so many butterflies in one place was unforgettable. The staff and community members who run the sanctuary were friendly and knowledgeable. There is a small restroom fee that goes back to supporting the local community, which we appreciated. Bring some extra cash, there are great small shops and food options on site. We chose the most challenging hike to both peaks. It was occasionally demanding at altitude but very doable with breaks, and horses are available if needed. The traditional food at the sanctuary was outstanding, and the whole experience felt authentic and thoughtfully managed. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Highly recommended.

This reserve is amazing! We arrived 245 on Monday at the end of December. It was a sunny day. We saw soo many butterflies fluttering. The walk up is shorter than other reserves. Horse riding cost 200 each way and takes about 10-14 minutes. Walk is about that time too. After the riding, we need to walk another 10-15 minutes to the viewing area. I’d recommend walking if you are reasonably fit. The viewing area is not too big so I recommend coming on a weekday. Meal afterwards at the entrance area was really nice - quesadilla, elote, blackberry stole.

Visiting the monarch wintering grounds of these amazing butterflies that I grew up with in Canada was a dream come true! It brought me to tears of joy that this natural wonder still exists and the butterflies still come here despite their ever dwindling numbers from human activity. I came to Angangueo by bus with the Zina bus company leaving from the Poniente bus station in Mexico city (over 3 hours). It was comfortable and inexpensive. I had read reviews about a local guide named Oscar who provides excellent tours to the sanctuaries. I contacted him by whatsapp. He lives in the area and takes visitors to the appropriate site for the day depending on local climatic conditions. This is very important because seeing them fly overhead in great numbers only occurs under certain conditions. I loved the tour he gave which was good value and from an experienced bilingual guide.

It was a nice walk for sure, sadly I have to say, I was not impressed by the whole thing. Maybe I had way to high expectations for the tour & experience in general. Local food was good though. That Grandma's atole that you can find on the restaurants at the beginning of the tour, priceless.
