Constant annoyance of locals petestering you to try things and to buy things. The pool was nice. Sad seeing the enclosure where they once kept dolphins. Inhumane and animal abuse!

MSC port. A small area isolated for cruise passengers. There is wifi but you need to buy a drink, which also includes a lounge chair by the swimming pool that is free for everyone. It’s $5USD pp for taxi to almost everywhere regulated by local law. Make sure you ask before getting in. Also if you try to get in before the exit they will group you in a mini van with as many people as they can fit inside. If you go outside the gates, you can get a small taxi for yourselves only for the same price. I suggest going to the lighthouse and walking to the town. Very pleasant short walk with shops along the beachside. Don’t walk out where cars are driving (next block) walk only on the pedestrian-only road. Bring cash. In Restaurants, if you charge they will say they are charging in pesos at 20 to 1 but they actually are charging in USD. Check your app to see how much was actually charged. Also the vendor’s prices are mostly marked up by at least 4x. So offer what you think is fair and you’re be surprised most often it is accepted. For example a box of cigars (probably counterfeit) will go for $100 to $200 USD but they’ll accept $20USD and probably even less or throw in a cigar cutter. The further towards the center of town where competition is fierce the better the prices and less negotiating you’ll need to do.

I like the people and the city, the port is at this time a little sad, many stores closed the impact the canceled royal project is obvious. The dolphin show is gone and I didn't see anything about the birds either. I would get off the ship and take a taxi to the city and enjoy. Skip the port, their prices are inflated and some stores are dishonest. I was quoted a price of $10 us and went to pay and it was $18. So pay attention or they may get you.

Colorful Port, but a Long Walk Costa Maya Cruise Port was colorful, lively, and filled with shops, restaurants, bars, entertainment, and a large swimming pool. It was a fun area to walk around, take pictures, and browse before heading into Mahahual or returning to the ship. The biggest drawback was the very long walk from the ship to the main port area, especially in the heat. This could be difficult for older visitors or anyone with mobility problems. There may be a trolley available, but it is not always easy to spot or depend upon. The port can also become very crowded when several cruise ships arrive at the same time. Overall, it was an attractive and enjoyable port, but better transportation along the long pier would make the experience much more comfortable.

I have been to Costa Maya many times, and some were fun and some were pretty unremarkable. I just visited last week and to my surprise there has been some good changes in the port and near the port. The shops have expanded greatly and a second pool has been added. The pool closest to the pier was pretty crowded, but if you walk a little farther there is a newer second pool and restaurant and bar. Not many people got that far. This pool is a great place to hang out and have a drink, a swim, and a bite to eat without leaving the port. But we venture a little farther, and a $5/person taxi ride to the south gets you to the little beach town of Mahahual. There is a boardwalk lined with beach clubs and bars and restaurants right on the beach. We reserved two beach chairs under a palapa and open bar with a light lunch for $54/person at the YaYa Beach Club. The energy was relaxed with chill music, good service, and nice drinks. Lunch was simple with three chicken and cheese quesadillas served with guacamole and salsa. Best part the food was safe! After spending hours relaxing swimming, and enjoying the vibe the host got us a taxi and we returned to the ship. A super nice day!
