发源于坦桑尼亚莫罗戈罗区云雾缭绕的东弧山脉，瓦米河蜿蜒流淌，形成面积达43,946平方公里的流域，最终注入印度洋。这条河流滋养了沿海森林、稀树草原和季节性泛滥的湿地，而其源头所在的东弧山脉作为全球生物多样性热点之一，凭借来自海洋的湿润气流形成丰沛降雨，与西侧干旱的马赛草原形成鲜明对比。历史上，山区森林曾调节河流流量，但近年来，森林退化和气候变化正逐渐改变它的水文特征。
在入海口附近，瓦米河成为坦桑尼亚唯一滨海国家公园——萨达尼国家公园的南部边界。这里淡水与海水交汇，形成独特的生态环境，河马、鳄鱼和候鸟在此栖息。下游河岸还保留着古代贸易路线的痕迹，曾是内陆部落与斯瓦希里海岸商贸往来的通道。
