盖尔塔·德阿切伊位于乍得东北部恩内迪高原，距离法达镇约40公里。该绿洲拥有一个狭长的山谷，山谷中充满浅水，四周被高耸的沙岩悬崖环绕。它是游牧部落和骆驼的重要水源，已有数百年历史。这里也是西非鳄鱼的栖息地，鳄鱼自“绿色撒哈拉”时期（约15,000至5,000年前）以来一直栖息于此。由于地处偏远且缺乏铺设道路，前往盖尔塔·德阿切伊的旅程颇具挑战，游客通常需从乍得首都恩贾梅纳出发，经历大约四天的越野车旅程才能抵达。
